#308: The Girl Who Never Saw Night, Part 4

Dragon Little and Dragon Father entered the shadow of night as they headed to the Night Planet.

A massive planet stood in between The Night Planet and the dreams’ two suns, so that it completely fell into darkness.

But not only the planet was in darkness: So were all its surroundings.

It did more than that: It blocked my own view from my hiding place. That first moment when Dragon Father made the Night Planet and its bigger sister planet appear, I had to climb out of my hiding place and fly to a better vantage point.

I still kept my distance. I was not yet ready to be called by Dragon Father for assistance and I did not think I would be today. But that day I watched them from another hiding place.

As soon as they entered the darkness, Dragon Little clung to her father, who was standing at the helm.

More and more light was disappearing and their surroundings would soon become completely dark.

“Oooh!” she said, clearly frightened.

“You all right?”

“Uh huh.”

And now they were in darkness.

“Aaaaa-a-a-a-a-a-ah!” Her voice quavered as she clearly fought to keep it under control.

“It’s all right, Joy, it’s all right. Keep holding on to me.”

“Ooooh, why can’t I see anything! I can’t see anything! Dad, Dad, are you here!”

“Joy, when you feel frightened, you just squeeze my hand tighter, okay?”

“Uh huh. Why can’t I see?”

“It’s the suns that gives us light, Joy. If light from the suns doesn’t reach, then there’s no light and we can’t see. But look at that!” I assume he was pointing, but not even my sharp eyes could see. “We’re not in complete darkness. See the stars in the sky?”

My sharp dragon ears heard her move her head.

“It doesn’t give us much light, but we can still see them. That’s what we see during the night: The stars in the sky!”

“How can you tell Bonny’s Revenge where to go?”

“I know the way.”

“Daaaaaad! Now I can’t see the stars! Ooooooh!” She squealed at the end, no doubt against her will. I have never seen her be this frightened or helpless.

“Squeeze my hand harder. You want to go back, Joy?” Only moments ago he had wanted to cancel the adventure and not go in.

“Ummmmm…. Yes?”

“Well, we can’t now. Now we have to go through the adventure and learn how to face our fears. Got it?”

I heard her exhale slowly.

“Got it?”

Her voice shook when she said, “Let’s show the bad guys what’s what!”

“There you go. That’s a brave girl. Now squeeze my hand whenever you want to. We just landed.”

But I grow so weary telling you of Dragon Little’s fear. that it hurts my soul.

Tomorrow I will tell what happened on the Night Planet
