“Stop, stop, stop!” Justin raises his hands. “We can’t believe this Guardian that he knows where Red is or that he’s a dream creature from outside my dream like the Fairy Flies. He’s a villain. He’s lying.”

Amahle clicks her tongue to indicate ‘No’. “Justin, you do not understand. Tell them what you told me,” she tells the Guardian.

The Guardian looks at Amahle in anger, then looks away. Amahe can’t see his expression, but she notes the silence. “All right,” she says. “Justin. He has told me he is of the Adroazni, a guardian spirit, and a child of the god Adroa.”

“So?” Justin says.

“You,” he says. “What did you say to my daughter!”

I stretch my neck and see a man approach the bars. I have seen him before, but I did not pay him much attention, since Joy and Justin both pointedly ignore him every time they walk into the Infinite Prison. Now that Amahle says he comes from legends in the Congo, that gives more context to his black skin and his black hair that’s cut very short. The right half of his face is almost entirely covered by a metal mask, with room for an eye to peek through. But there is no eye behind that hole, but a soft yellow glow. Anything that is not covered by the mask looks human, including the other eye. He is tall, thin, and wiry.

“Before we do anything, Joy has to brush her teeth,” Justin shows her the toothbrush and toothpaste that usually hang on the sabretooth’s teeth in her cabin. In his other hand he produces one of the many bottles of water made permanent on Bonny’s Revenge.

Joy, still groggy from sleep, makes a face, but takes the toothbrush.

“Zhoy sleeps in her, uh, clothes?” Madelyn says, forgetting for a moment a word in English then remembering it.

Joy looks around, confused, holding the toothbrush and the toothpaste in her hands.

“Joy, what’s the matter?” Charlie says.

“This is just… strange. How can I brush my teeth without a plank?”

This is our first day staying in what Joy has named our ‘temporary base’: The tunnels into and out of Justin’s dream, and the Shroom outside.

We are still afraid that Justin will appear dreaming about those horrible demons. Which is also why we’re not going to Charlie’s dream. A dream’s a dream, regardless of the dreamer.

So here we are, those who stay behind when the Dreamers are awake: Master Mind, Suzy and I, and Joy.

Suzy is sitting on one of the two lawn chairs that Justin summoned, leaning outside the tunnel, and that Joy touched and made real. Suzy has put it on top of Justin’s Shroom, and is sitting on it like she’s on the beach. Except that she’s looking at countess Shrooms in every direction, stretching down past our ability to see, stretching up so high in the sky that we can’t discern their origin.

“Look at that,” Charlie points at his Shroom, about ten meters below them. “My Shroom is so far down that you can’t jump to it.”

Joy shrugs. “I think it’s because you appear on Bonny’s Revenge in Dad’s dream. The Shroom just drops without you.”

Charlie nods in agreement.

They look around.

“Do you ever think, Joy,” he says, “about all the dreams and Dreamers we’ve seen?”

With Justin and Charlie both awake and gone from the dream, it’s time for Master Mind and Joy to do their special delivery to Charlie’s dream. As always, I join them. Just in case something happens. Just in case something should be reported back to Justin.

Joy has gathered on the deck of Bonny’s Revenge ten permanent jetpacks that Charlie has left in Justin’s dream, having used them to come over. Once he’s here, he wakes up from here and the jetpack gets left behind.

So, once a week, Joy and Master Mind bring them back.

I follow his gaze and realize I’m looking down two meters at Madelyn’s Shroom. We’ve been to her dream four times now. But now… Madelyn sits on the shroom, right at the tunnel entrance, her hands holding the ground underneath her tightly.

I have never seen another Dreamer outside their dream!

“Whoa,” Joy says.

“Oh, my god!” Justin says.

Joy hugs the stem of the Shroom for an hour before something happens. The stem leads to the Shroom, which holds the tunnels, which lead somehow, impossibly, into Justin’s dream which seems to be infinite in size and in which anything can happen. And yet the stem has only enough room for ten people at most, and that is if they stand uncomfortably close.

After about an hour, Charlie’s Shroom falls.

We wait for hours, but the Shrooms don’t fall. Joy and Charlie insist on not letting go of the Shrooms’ stems in all that time. Joy is holding on to the stem of Justin’s dream, and Charlie holds on to the stem of his dream.

At some point I decide to sit down on the small surface of the Shroom. I still hold Master Mind’s hand. I am still afraid I might fall when the Shroom collapses.

They spend the time talking to each other by yelling from Shroom to Shroom.

I ask Master Mind to hold my hand. I am really afraid. I’m the only one who is.

Joy, Master Mind and I, are standing on top of Justin’s Shroom. The tunnels that lead back inside are on two sides of the stem and Joy is hugging the stem between the tunnels.

Joy has to be sitting down while hugging the Shroom since the Fairy Flies have taken Justin’s stem to be their home. Over the last few months they have gathered and come to rest on the stem at the height of Joy’s head. Possibly this is their nest, but who knows. They don’t talk.

Two meters below us and ahead is Charlie, standing on his own Shroom, hugging his own Shroom’s stem.

“Ready, Joy?”

When the door opens, we are only a few centimeters from the tunnel. In the middle of the sun, it’s not that bright, as the edge of the tunnel shines outwardly, filling Charlie’s dream with light.

“We’re going to your dad’s dream, right?” I ask.

Joy nods. She’s the boss. I’ve learned that we can’t make her do anything.

The tunnel, slimy, with strange pock marks, always makes me feel woozy. The fact that it seems to be shrinking slightly and expanding slightly doesn’t help. The fact that I have to lower my head to walk in it also doesn’t help. I really hate these tunnels.

We come out to stand on Charlie’s Shroom. I look around, feeling disoriented. The Shrooms are not in the same position as they were when we came in.

“What is it?” Justin says.

“It’s like a tiny fairy with really big teeth,” Charlie says. “Is it going to eat me?”

“It’s just a fly,” Joy waves at it dismissively. “General Hawk and I saw a cloud of them. They don’t do anything.”

Justin reaches out with an open palm, inviting the creature to land on his hand. But the creature flies up, circles around Charlie’s head, then flies towards the stem behind us. The Shroom’s stem is thick, thrice as thick as Justin’s body. And I can see a handful of these glowing creatures are already resting on the stem.

“They’re are quite cute,” Master Mind says with his robotic voice. “Petting them would bring me pleasure. As would crushing them between my fingers.”

Joy is the proof that this place is real. The Dream is real! Dreams happen in a real place! Because Joy lives here. Joy can make dreams like me real, she can make us stay. I have never thought, never believed, never supposed…

If there was a way to get this information to the outside world, to other scientists…!

“They’re called Shrooms,” Joy said. “I named them!”

“That’s my Shroom over there!” Charlie points down. “It was above us when I came here.”

Now it’s a couple of meters below us and to the side.
