Colin, Madelyn, and Yumio enter our living room first. Then Justin does. Then Charlie and Joy, holding hands. Joy and Justin are the only ones who don’t seem afraid. Justin, perhaps, because it is his mummy. And I’m not sure why Joy isn’t more cautious. But at least she’s protected by five Dreamers who will leap to her aid if one Dreamer goes crazy.

Master Mind follows next. Suzy peeks through.

“Oh, my,” Suzy says. “There is a mummy in our living room!”

It’s a busy morning on the deck of Bonny’s Revenge. We have all our dreamers here at once when Justin arrives: Amahle, Madelyn, Yumio, Charlie, Colin, and now Justin has joined.

Joy, Charlie, Madelyn and Yumio have been playing Catch in the Clouds, all wearing Yumio’s mechas. Colin has been drinking tea with Suzy and me on the deck while waiting for Justin.

When Justin appears, everyone gathers and tells him the plan.

“Madelyn, please get rid of the babies,” Justin implores her. I’ve counted fifteen babies on the limo seats and floor. Suzy is holding two of them, Madelyn another one, I took another one, but it’s not helping. And the babies are beginning to cry.

“Get rid of the traffic jam, Justin,” she tells him. “We have to get to Bordeaux, not Paris!”

“The babies, Madelyn!”

“Grampa, what’s the matter with Dad!” Joy is frightened. “Grandma, why are you laughing?”

“I’m going to die,” he looks at his wrinkled hands. “It’s the end.”

Suzy can’t stop laughing.

“It’s going to be all right, Joy,” I tell her. “It’s going to be all right. It’s just his–”

“Three!” Master Mind ends his count.

Justin’s face is all clenched in anger at the traffic jam in front of him, the one he had created.

It doesn’t seem that Master Mind is having any influence on him.

Master Mind lowers the rope ladder. “Grab the rope, Little Pirate,” Master Mind says loudly enough for us to hear. “I will take you to safety before this gets out of hand.”

Joy looks at the rope hanging just to the side. She takes Justin’s hand in both of hers. “Calm down, Dad. Calm down. Let’s have a birthday party.”

We can see Paris through the driver’s window, not more than a few kilometers away.

“This is nice,” Joy lies down on some of the chairs next to Suzy and me. “What kind of a car did you say this is?”

“It’s a limousine,” Justin says impatiently as the driver begins to decelerate approaching the highway.

“Why’d you say ‘limo’ before?”

“Oh, no!” Justin says, looking forward through the window. “God damn traffic jam!”

Justin and Colin are on top of Big Ben, right underneath the tunnel, so Suzy and I can hear everything: The explosions, the destruction caused by the tentacle monster, and Joy calling out for her father.

“Joy! Look out!” Charlie shouts as a 3-meter tentacle heads their way.

Justin follows Charlie’s voice and looks down from Master Mind to the streets, and he sees Joy and Charlie just as Charlie clings to her like a human shield, and a rock appears all around them. Hopefully there is air to breathe within that rock.

“Joy! Oh, my god!” Justin yells “Colin! Colin! Stop!” he grabs Colin. “You’re having a nightmare! None of this is real!”

Even though this is Justin’s dream, Amahle is the only dreamer here, and she controls the dream.

The dream changes an hour later. The Zulu village of Amahle’s mother in the middle of the desert changes to a bustling city street. I have never been, but I assume it is Johannesburg, the city Amahle grew up in.

From being inside a hut, surrounded by darkness, Amahle and Joy are in a small apartment building, surrounded by the same cloud of darkness. Bonny’s Revenge, with Suzy and me in it, hovers a few meters above the street, with buildings to every side.

It’s not a person’s wail, it’s music that imitates a wail. The wail turns into a scream of pain. And the air is then filled with almost unbearably sad music.

“Amahle?” Suzy asks me. She’s heard the music of Amahle’s dream before, but not like this.

I nod.

“It is a tragedy, Pirate Mother,” Master Mind answers softly, his voice only loud enough to get over the music and reach us, who are leaning on the railing a few meters above him, looking down at him. “The Sunless One’s mother had died.”

Suzy and I look over the railing. I hear Amahle’s voice.

“Joy?” Amahle says from within the darkness. “Are you here? Come with me.”

Joy steps into the cloud of darkness that surrounds Amahle just as Master Mind lands next to her.

For the second time today, or ever, I hear Master Mind make a sound that I never expected to hear from a killer robot. He growls in frustration.

“Little Pirate,” he says in a low but forceful voice. “Come out!”

“Take my hand,” I hear Amahle say. “I want to show you something.”

If this darkness is the same as the one in Amahle’s dream, Master Mind cannot see inside the darkness, but Joy can.

The sky where the aerial battle had been between the condors and the demons is now different. One demon holds Justin’s limp body in the air, while another holds Charlie by the neck. There are no other creatures left.

Charlie screams in horror and Suzy’s nails dig into my back.

“Master Mind!” Joy says.

“It will not help!” Master Mind says. “The Pirate is in control of his dream.”

“Do it!”

Charlie’s fleet of 11 condors flies towards the army of what must be a thousand dark demons.

Justin is dangling limply from the talons of one of the demons, but it’s his nightmare that’s bringing about the demons.

Charlie raises his hand and the sky fills with clouds.

“I’ve never seen him like this!” I whisper.

“He wants to be like me,” Joy says matter-of-factly.

I look at her for a second. “How do you know?”

She shrugs. “He tells me all the time.”

A condor as big as Bonny’s Revenge descends from above to hover outside the ship’s deck, the one farther from us. Suzy, Joy, Master Mind and I watch from the tunnel as Charlie jumps from the railing to the back of the condor with unusual bravery for such a height.

Joy nods to herself. “He used that condor when we met. She’s his friend.”

The dark demons are a kilometer or so ahead of him, throwing Justin from one to the other.

As Charlie flies on the condor towards the demons, more giant condors appear at his side. There are eleven of them now, creating a V formation in the air, with Charlie at the point of the V.

“Oh, my…” Suzy says. “He’s just a little kid. He’s going to have an aerial battle with demons?”

Justin reappears a few moments later, and with him come the dark demons.

We are all watching from the safety of the tunnel, but I hold my breath as soon as I see them. Suzy, near me, gasps. Joy’s hand goes to the holster of the laser pistol at her side, but she doesn’t draw it.

Justin tries to fight the demon with a sword from the weapons cabinet, but he is suddenly inept with a sword.

“Dad! Into the tunnel!” Joy yells at him.

She stands right on the edge of the tunnel, confident that nothing of the dream can make it across.

Justin sees her, and immediately there is a jetpack on his back. He flies forward, as Joy ducks, but one of the huge demons captures him in its huge talons.

Once Charlie had taken Justin out of his dream and into the tunnel, there was no longer any danger.

Joy dusted herself off, and went off to helm Bonny’s Revenge up to the sun that Charlie had gone through.

Suzy and I get up slowly from the deck. I can’t help but notice that Joy doesn’t try and help us and doesn’t check up on us. Maybe she assumes we’re okay?

“Suzy?” I ask, looking at her all disheveled and half panicked.

“I’m fine. I’m fine,” she straightens her clothes. “How are you?”

I feel a strange need to touch my chest and actually feel that I wasn’t hurt. “I think I’m okay. That was… That was really scary.”

“Is this how your adventures are?”

Charlie looks around helplessly as one of the dark creatures attempts to grab Joy.

Joy leaps out of the way, but it was close.

Joy’s weapon needs to recharge. Justin, whose dreams these are, is an obsessed dreamer and can’t snap out of it. And Master Mind’s weapons aren’t working on them.

Charlie raises his hand as if about to conjure something as a dreamer. But he doesn’t. His mind is clearly a blank.

Master Mind leaps at one of the creatures now flying above the ship, who is trying to grab Joy. He grabs the bottom of its taloned leg and is now rising into the air with the creature.

“My missiles do not wound the monsters,” Master Mind sounds panicky.

“They’ve come for you, Joy!” Justin rolls to the weapons cabinet and goes his body to the fetal position. I have never seen him cower in the Dream.

Joy, on the floor next to the weapons cabinet, launches what looks like a bazooka, but a space bazooka. “Dad! It’s not them!” She aims it at the creatures descending on the ship, and fires at the closest one.

With a zark! sound Joy’s weapon launches a thick, red ray of energy at the closest creature, and it punches a hole in its body. The dark, bat-like creature that’s the size of the ship falls back and into the ocean, dead. “They’re your dream! Make them go away!”

Joy is exhausted. Charlie vanished, waking up, only after a few minutes. If he’d returned to sleep, he hadn’t returned to Justin’s dream.

“Take a break, everyone!” Justin says, and we all find a spot to sit and rest.

“Darling,” Suzie sits near Justin. “What happened in your life that got you to dream such an awful dream?”

Hmm. I hadn’t thought of that.

Justin gives it some thought. He hadn’t thought of it, either. “I don’t want to talk about it, Mom.”

“I could see the zombies were about to get Grandma’s and Grandpa’s island!”

We’re heading down to the island which is the place of Suzy’s and my home in Justin’s dream. Joy is describing to Charlie how she survived.

“I went into the house. I knew that zombies weren’t that smart. I knew my weapons wouldn’t be enough. And I knew that ovens keep their smell inside.”

“So what’d you do?” he asks her wide-eyed.
