All in Age: 5.5

“Joy…” Dragon Father said, his voice full of foreboding, “Did you jump in front of the broom so it would hit you?”

“I didn’t jump,” she said simply.

“Did you move when it came closer so it would hit you in the face?”

She shrugged. “I donnoe.”

“Joy… did you get hit on the face on purpose so you could lose a tooth?”

The trouble began when the Wicked Witch fell off her flying broom, struck in the shoulder by Dragon Father’s laser.

The Wicked Witch fell, and the flying broom swung out of control, heading in circles in all directions in the air.

Dragon Little, still five and a half years old, stood next to her father and watched the broom lose control, come closer, further away, closer, and then suddenly whiz by her, striking her in the face as it turned around.

“Joy!”

“Look, Dad, look.”

She and dragon Father were hiding behind barrels of rum on a dock, waiting for the pirates to arrive.

“What?”

She moved her shaky tooth to one side of her mouth. The tooth was now completely horizontal.

“Yai yai yai! Don’t show that to me!” Dragon Father shivered. “That’s--I can’t take that!”

Dragon Little was getting to be close to 6 years old.

I did not know it at the time, but soon she and I would part ways.

On my long journey I would often feel fear and excitement at the task I had set to myself. At the same time I would feel great fear for the little human girl I’ve come to call Dragon Little over the years. I should be protecting her, I would tell myself and fear for her life, for she would no doubt soon find the way out of her father’s dream.

And yet… remembering moments like the ones I will tell you now give me peace of mind that this ist one human girl that can protect herself.

Dragon Father picked up the sword, this time with calmness and confidence.

Dragon Little was sitting atop the highest branches of the tree, looking down at the clearing. She was five and a half years old and with five and a half years of experience in doing exactly what she wants rather than what her father wants.

The Big Bad Wolf, a giant, black-furred villain that walked on two, stood opposite Dragon Father and smiled, ready for a true and vicious fight this time.

In the middle of the forest, Dragon Father was sitting in the cell of the Big Bad Wolf, made of powerful tree branches, handing from a high tree.

Above him, hidden by the trees, having snuck into the camp, was Dragon Little, almost 6 years old and so much more independent and strong than the child she had been when I had met her almost four years ago.

Dragon Little was almost six years old when Dragon Father was captured by the evil Big Bad Wolf and his lackeys.

Dragon Little and Dragon Father had separated in an attempt to slip past the Big Bad Wolf’s defenses in the forests and steal back the Ball of Light that he had stolen from Princess Red Riding Hood.

The Big Bad Wolf tied up Dragon Father and threw him in a ‘cell’ made out of powerful, long tree branches. The cell was hanging from the top of a tree just above the Big Bad Wolf’s camp.

I suspect that Dragon Father did not put up too big of a fight because his subconscious expected his daughter to come and save him.

“Last time I was here!” She pointed to a spot a few millimeters underneath.

“You’re growing up so much, you’re going to be taller than me one day.”

“I’m going to be as tall as the sky?”

“I… yeah…” he laughed. “You’re going to be as high as the sky!”

“I’m going to be as tall as you?”

The Pirates of Captain Bud caught Dragon Father.

They did it with perfection. First, they separated him from Dragon Little.

Once she fell into the Sinking Sands, they attacked him and forced him to flee.

He fell into their traps time after time, each time losing a gun, a sword, and getting out only by the skin of his teeth.

Finally, they surrounded him, exhausted and weaponless.

Dragon Father and Dragon Little were pinned down behind a huge rock on the planet of the Laser Pirates of Chinchilla. The pirates were firing lasers from atop the castle they had overtaken, and Dragon Little and Dragon had nothing to do but cower down behind the rock. They had nowhere to go.

“Dad,” my sweet Dragon Little said. “You can’t be hurt by lasers! Get up and storm them!”

He appeared in the middle of the deck on Bonny’s Revenge, as always in exactly the same spot. She had been ready and waiting for him for almost two hours.

The second he appeared, she started jumping up and down: “You gotta watch this, Dad! You gotta watch this!”

This was done so fast following his appearance, that he shook his head, trying to concentrate on what is happening. As a result, the night sky, the cities in the clouds, and even the winds appeared, then disappeared, then appeared again. It ist the world he creates every time he appears, no doubt without his knowledge.

Joy woke up when an evil Red Pirate crashed through the door to the door of her cabin and hit the other side of the cabin with force.

She turned in her bed, and opened her eyes.

The Red Pirate ignored her and rushed back out.

There was noise of fighting outside.

She sighed and sat up.

The evil king was defeated and handcuffed, waiting to be led by Dragon Little and Dragon Father into the Infinite Prison in the belly of Bonny’s Revenge

But Dragon Father was in no hurry to go back to the ship.

He walked around the big room and then sat down on the king’s throne, one leg over the side.

“This is nice,” he said. “Want to try it?”

I do not often tell you about the adventures of Dragon Little and Dragon Father. They have had adventures almost every day I had known them. But these adventures are not real - they are Dragon Father’s dreams. He does not know it, but he controls the villains, the outcomes, the risk, and their success.

So the risk ist never real. The adventure ist never true. Except when Dragon Little ist left behind to deal with the few villains who are left when Dragon Father awakes. But even then she ist somewhat protected.
