Dragon Little was three and a half years old when, in the middle of an adventure, Dragon Father and Dragon Little saw four unicorns.
“Aw, look at that, look at that!” Dragon Father stopped her and crouched down, motioning her to crouch down as well.
They were in the middle of a small field of high grass in a magical forest, chasing down an evil wizard, when Dragon Father noticed them.
“See? Over there? That’s a unicorn. They’re so rare!”
“Whoaaaaaa…” Dragon Little whispered.
“How many unicorns do you see? Let’s count them.”
Over the past week, Dragon Father had been diligent about teaching Dragon Little to count, usually up to 20, whenever he could.
“One… two…” she whispered, pointing at each one. “...five… six!”
“Whoa, whoa, count again! More slowly!”
“One… two… five… six.”
“Okay. Wait. I’ll count and you count with me. One…”
“One…” she repeated.
“Two…” he said slowly.
“Five six!” she said quickly.
“Three four! I’ll show you. One, two…”
“Seven eight!” she jumped in quickly and smiled.
Dragon Father looked at her, cocking his head. “Are you having fun with me?”
“One two nine ten! Ten unicorns!”
He nodded. “Yes, that’s right. There are ten unicorns.”
And they remained there, crouched, and looked at the ten unicorns.
