‘The Squashbuckler Diaries’ are the daily tales of Joy Shelley’s Life in the Dream. The ‘Lost in Dreams’ books will tell the story of what happens to her at ages 6, 9, 12, 15, and so on. The diaries tell us what happens before, after, and between the books.

#389: The Two Killers, Part 4

Dragon Father appeared on the deck of Bonny’s Revenge while Dragon Little was still asleep in the Infinite Prison, held gently by General Hawk.

“Joy! Joy!” Dragon Father called out after seeing Dragon Little was not in her cabin.

A quick search revealing nothing sent him down to the winding stairway into the infinite corridor and out of my eyesight.

No doubt he quickly saw her.

I heard him walk slowly in.

“What’s going on?” I heard him say gently, no stress in his voice.

“The Nestling was quite upset,” I heard General Hawk’s voice. “After yesterday’s adventures.”

“That’s understandable,” Dragon Father said softly.

“It is. I spoke to her about what it would feel like for the next few weeks and months.”

“Thank you for that,” Dragon Father sounded earnest. “I assume you two are talking again?”

“Hmmmm… We did yesterday. I hope it lasts.”

“Hmmm. Okay. Time to wake her up. We have a fun adventure today, nothing as bad as yesterday.”

“Pirate,” General Hawk said. “Well done.”

“I’m sorry?” I did not see Dragon Father’s expression. I do not know why he did not hear General Hawk the first time.

“Well done, pirate.”

And then, when he responded, I heard a tone in Dragon Father’s voice I do not recall hearing before. “Thank you,” he said, in a tone that ist truly humble and thankful.

He took a few more breaths and then woke Dragon Little up for a brand new fun adventure.
