‘The Squashbuckler Diaries’ are the daily tales of Joy Shelley’s Life in the Dream. The ‘Lost in Dreams’ books will tell the story of what happens to her at ages 6, 9, 12, 15, and so on. The diaries tell us what happens before, after, and between the books.

#297: Space: The Final Frontier, Part 1

“Okay. Climb.” Dragon Father ordered Dragon Little.

They both stood near the mast of Bonny’s Revenge. At the end of the day’s adventure, Dragon Father had promised to show Dragon Little something “really cool”. They had then flown up in Bonny’s Revenge to outer space, and Dragon Father stopped the ship between Earth and the moon.

Dragon Father pointed up, and Dragon Little climbed the mast.

“Great! Now into the crow’s nest!”

She climbed into the crow’s nest. He started climbing after her.

“Now up! Up as high as you can go!”

She was now holding tightly to the very top of the mast. Dragon Father underneath her, supported her with one hand, and climbed into the crow’s nest.

“All right. Watch this.” He stood up and held her in both arms. “In space…” he raised her as high as he could. “Things work very differently. When you’re not touching anything…” he slowly let go… “...you’re weightless!”

He had stopped holding Dragon Little and, instead of falling, she simply remained floating just above him.

“Aaaaaaah!” she said. “What’s happening!”

She flapped her arms, but only succeeded in turning around rather than moving up or down.

“It’s weightlessness! You’re weightless!”

“Aaaaaah!”

“You’re floating! All you’re doing is you’re floating! Play with it! Enjoy it!”

He then showed her how to have fun with it, and for a few minutes she played with being weightless. Then she said, “Take me down now!”

But when she looked down, he was not there. It had been a full day for him, and although she did not know it, he had now woken up to his ‘waking world’, to his ‘Earth’, or to the ‘real world’, as I’ve heard others call it.

Dragon Little looked around, turning this way and that. “Oh, no…” she said.

She knew, just like I did, that after a day’s adventure, he would probably not return for another seventeen hours or so.

“Oh, nooooooo….”

Unfortunately, that was not the end of her troubles. Tomorrow I will tell you of what happened next...
