On this day, Dragon Little woke up early and with a gasp.

She immediately jumped out of bed and ran out of her cabin. She looked around, clearly searching for her father.

She looked up. Most of the stars were gone from the sky.

She relaxed, no doubt certain now that her father had not yet appeared.

A mischievous smile appeared on her Dragon Little’s face. “Heh heh heh!” she cackled like a few of the villains in their adventures.

Thank You the turtle brought Dragon Little and the small, wooden lifeboat to rest beside Bonny’s Revenge.

Dragon Little began to cry.

She jumped from the lifeboat to Thank You’s shell, then hugged him.

“It was so much fun that you came back, Thank You. So much fun!”

Thank You didn’t answer.

“But you can’t come back again. You can’t ever come back. Do you understand?”

Thank You looked at her.

“Oh, so cool!” I heard what only sharp dragon’s ears could hear: a soft, muted gurgle that climbs through the water to its surface and then up, kilometers into the air and into my hiding place.

“Look at that!” I heard her say.

“Not so deep! Not so deep!” and then her voice was full of water.

The lifeboat floated upwards and she couldn’t contain it. Her voice was underwater for a second, then breathing air again. Her hands were tied to the ship, so she no doubt floated up with it, her legs not strong enough to cling to Thank You.

Within seconds, the boat buoyed up to the surface, still upside-down.

When Dragon Little asked Thank You the turtle if he wanted to go on adventure with her, I was skeptical. ‘Adventure’ only happens when Dragon Father dreams it. When he ist gone, as he was now, villains, planets, locations do not just appear out of nowhere. When her father ist gone, Dragon Little can only ‘play’ in the emptiness he leaves behind.

But Dragon Little seemed confident.

“You wait for me right here, okay, Thank You?” she patted his back.

He nodded.

The adventure was over. Dragon Father had vanished early in the adventure and never returned to finish it. Dragon Little was able to finish the adventure by herself and imprisoned the villain in the infinite prison in the belly of Bonny’s Revenge.

Dragon Little had parked Bonny’s Revenge back in Earth’s ocean and spent her time walking back and forth on the railing, keeping her balance.

Something bobbed up underneath her and she stopped to look.

It was a big sea turtle. He bobbed his head above water.

“Thank You!” Joy exclaimed. “Thank You! You’re back!”

Dragon Little, my Dragon Little, was all alone on her third birthday.

Dragon Father did not appear as usual. He was gone. He must have stayed up the entire night in his waking world and from the time he disappeared in the middle of an adventure to the time he reappeared on Bonny’s Revenge, almost two days have passed.

In the year I have been in his dream, in the year since he and Dragon Little rescued me from slavery, he had never mentioned her birthday. Nor did he mention it in the next year.

Dragon Father jumped to the dock quickly, a fire torch in his hand, looking around.

“Joy!” he whispered.

He was trying not to get the attention of the Wicked Wizards, but he needed to find his daughter. “Joy!”

Just a few moments ago he had disappeared, leaving her, a girl who had never known what night is, without light on the lightless Night Planet. But it had been just the beginning of his dream. He had woken up for a few minutes, then returned to his dreams moments later.

But things have changed since he had vanished.

The Wicked Wizards were getting closer to my Dragon Little. I heard her scamper quickly, feel with her hands in complete darkness.

From the sound she was feeling the wooden crates.

My sharp dragon ears heard the soft squeak of a crate being opened from a few planets away.

I heard her drop into a soft something (fruit, perhaps?) and then close the crate above her.

A few seconds later, the Wicked Wizards walked into the room.

Once Dragon Father had disappeared, and his burning torches with him, I could not see Dragon Little on the Night Planet.

My wings opened as I crouched in my new vantage point, automatically about to leap to her help and light the planet sky with the fire of my breath. But I stopped myself.

Whatever the trouble, she would need to toughen up. She was growing up. She was almost six. She would no doubt soon find the right place to explore in her father’s dream and find the way to other dreams, where real danger lurked for every every day.

“Dad, how can we fight guys like this?”

Dragon Little’s voice was losing some of its panic and fear in the total darkness of the Night Planet.

Dragon Father had led Dragon Little into a warehouse a bit off the pier. I remember the warehouse from the small glow that covered the planet when Joy had first stepped on it. But I could not see the warehouse now, not even with my sharp eyes. The darkness was complete on that planet in Dragon Father’s dream.

I had just rescued Dragon Little without her knowing it was me from being captured by Captain Badass.

Dragon Father had disappeared not long ago after a full day of adventure, which meant that he would only return to his dream in sixteen or seventeen hours. If I were Dragon Little, now back aboard Bonny’s Revenge, outnumbered and without my father, I would run and hide using my faster ship.

But that ist not what Dragon Little did.

She hopped off the ship, went to the edge of the cloud, and peered down without fear.

It was quite a distance downwards.

She then took off her pants and panties, crouched down, and peed into the air.

She stood up, put her pants and panties back on, and looked down at the water falling.

Then she smiled.

I have seen that mischievous smile many times before.

Dragon Father disappeared in the middle of a swashbuckling battle with Captain Badass and his pirates.

Bonny’s Revenge and Captain Badass’ ship hung in the air just outside a cloud city, and his entire crew had leapt onto Bonny’s Revenge. Only three minutes into the battle, Dragon Father disappeared (having woken up). With him disappeared the cloud city as well as all of Captain Badass’ pirates.

But he, as almost all top villains do, remained behind.

And Dragon Little, only three-and-a-half years old, stood in front of him, metal sword in hand.

For a few days now, two-year-old Dragon Little has been insisting to her father that she, with her wooden sword, will be the one to face-off with the villain.

She was, of course, not fit for that. Going on daily adventure every day does not make a 2-year-old human girl become fit to defeat the villains of her father’s swashbuckling dreams.

Many hours after he had disappeared, Dragon Father appeared on the deck of Bonny’s Revenge.

He looked around.

“Oh, Joy!” he shouted, and ran to the helm.

Bonny’s Revenge rose into the air and flew at a speed that matches a dragon’s to where Dragon Father had left his daughter the previous day.

After Princess Adriana left Bonny’s Revenge for her arranged marriage, Dragon Father set off on his quest.

It was a wild quest, where he single-handedly defeated frost giants, orcs, and a terrible scheme to forge a single ring that would rule the entire world.

The adventure was wilder than usual, more violent, required more effort on his part, but Justin Shelley, Pirate Extraordinaire, was up to the job.

Dragon Father had disappeared, having woken up in his other world which I had never seen, but the Super Ninja was not yet handcuffed and the handcuffs were held by the sweet, four-year-old Dragon Little.

Neither the Super Ninja nor Dragon Little responded in any way to the fact that Dragon Father had disappeared.

“Come on, give me your hands,” Dragon Little said.
