“Joy, come on, we’ve got bad guys to catch, damsels to save!”
“Shhh, shhh,” she put her tiny hand to his forehead. “You’re very tired.”
He sighed. “Yes, I’m very tired.”

“Shh!” the captain said immediately. “Don’t wake her! She’s a lot of trouble when she’s awake!”
Dragon Little stirred at the noise.

“Surrender, girl!” he screamed at the top of his voice and aimed his sword at her face.
“You know what you have to say, Captain Badass!” she said, at all flustered by the threat. “Tweedle weedle dee!”
He hesitated. He looked around at his pirates. He probably suspected her of using some kind of ploy, but was comforted by the numbers. “Eh…. Surrender… Please?”

“They held them off at the border, fighting to the last feather. They held them off for the fifteen minutes we needed to regather our forces and to join the battle. By then they had died. But they had given their lives so that we all may live. They are heroes. A father cannot ask more than for his children to die in battle as they did.”
“Wow…” Dragon Little sounded speechless and awed.
Then, after a short silence, she said, “I want to die in battle.”

Her head sunk for a second underwater, but she paddled hard, got it above water, and breathed.
She reached the rope ladder and grabbed it with all her force.
I could see what she was doing. She was teaching herself to swim.

“Never mind. Look at this.” He pulled out a yellowish object the size of his palm. I have never seen anything like it. I did not know what it was. “This,” he emphasized. “Is a fruit. Uh, or a vegetable. I’m not really sure. It’s a fruit or a vegetable, okay? You eat it.”
She nodded, her eyes crinkling, not following what he is trying to say.
“Now look here,” he leaned into the ship and put the fruit-or-vegetable on the seat. “See?”
She nodded.
“Now I’m buckling it in…. There! See?”

“Nah, nah, nah. You tried to poke my eyes out. You’re the cheater! I’m the mightiest of them all!” He held both arms to his sides and bent then, as if he was showing his muscles. Which he didn’t really have. Not in the dream, at least. I do not know what he looked like back on Earth.
“I’m the mightiest of them all!”

He took a deep breath. They stared at each others’ eyes. “Now!” He said.
They stared at each at each other for a few seconds. Then, “You blinked!” he pointed at her. “I win!”
“No fair! No fair!” She was angry. “I wasn’t ready. Again!”

“Hold on. Let’s try something.”
He bent his knees low, keeping his back straight, and grabbed Dragon Little under her armpits.
“Ready?” he asked.

“Ready!” She did not ask ready for what.

“Yes yes yes!” Dragon Father said.
“No no no!” Dragon Little replied, smiling.
“Yes yes yes!” He nodded.
“No no no!” She shook her head.

She whirled around quickly, her face angry. “Scared? I’m not scared! Why do you think I’m scared?”
Dragon Father shook his head, no doubt as surprised as I was by the intensity. “No, I just--”
“Why were you scared?” she aimed an accusing finger at him.

“Dad…”
“What, sweetheart?”
“Don’t go. Stay here when I sleep.”
“Go? Where am I gonna go? This is my home.”

Dragon Little was three years old when she confronted her first alien fleet.
A massive alien invasion of almost a thousand ships descended upon the Earth.

“You put it on. It keeps you afloat. It helps you swim.”
Dragon Little waved it aside. “I don’t need it. I can swim.”
Dragon Little marched towards the wooden construct, then quickly made way towards the stairs that led into the sea.

Dragon Little almost laughed and caught herself. She kicked him again softly.
“Ow! Are you the strongest girl in the world?! Is that possible?! How are you hitting me that hard!”
She laughed now.

“Today, you failed in being a parent,” the villain continued.
“Well, thank you, General Hawk, for that amazing insight,” snarled Dragon Father. “I was really hoping to get parenting advice from a mass murderer!”

“Aaaaaah!” He shouted in real pain and jumped back. “What are you doing! Stop it! Why are you behaving like an animal?”
Dragon Little’s face was indeed like an animal, as she squeezed every muscle in her face and growled at him: “Grrrrrr!”

"Now I want to try,” she said.
“Not now,” he growled and fired the cannons.
She would ask him relentlessly, “Dad, my turn!” “Dad, I wanna!” “Is it my turn?”
“Wake the hell up, Joy, I don’t have time for this!”
He grabbed the blanket off her, threw it on the floor, and stomped out.
“Wake up, don’t wake up, I don’t care,” he strode angrily to the wheel. “I have a battle to win!”
